AI voice agent

An AI voice agent is software that holds a phone conversation on its own: it listens to the caller, decides what to say and replies in a synthesised voice.

Also called AI calling agent, voice AI agent, AI voice bot, conversational voice AI.

It can answer calls or place them. Unlike a recorded message or a keypad menu, it works out what the caller means and responds to what they actually say.

How it works

A call reaches the agent over ordinary telephony, usually a SIP trunk carrying a real phone number. Each turn of the conversation then runs through the same loop:

  1. Listen. The agent hears what the caller says, in their own words.
  2. Know when the caller has finished. The agent decides whether a pause means the caller is done or is only taking a breath.
  3. Think. The agent reads the conversation so far, its brief and any reference documents, then chooses a reply or an action, such as saving a budget to the CRM or booking a slot.
  4. Speak. The agent voices its reply.

The time this loop takes is the agent’s voice latency. If it runs long, callers talk over the agent or hang up.

Why it matters in India

Indian sales teams face volume, language and timing at once. Property ads bring in leads at every hour, callers speak many languages and often move between Hindi and English inside one sentence, and the first conversation usually decides whether a lead deserves a salesperson’s time. An agent can make that first call, run lead qualification in the caller’s language and hand the team a structured record.

BlackWolf Labs, for example, builds agents that answer and place calls in the caller’s own language, whichever it is, qualify each lead and write every call into a CRM dashboard.

Example

A buyer fills in a Meta lead form for a 2 BHK project in Pune at 22:40. Next morning, once the calling window opens, the agent rings her, names the developer it is calling for, confirms her budget and preferred locality, answers a question about possession from the project brochure and books a site visit for Sunday. The salesperson opens the CRM to a summary, a transcript and the recording.

Rules that still apply

An outbound sales call made by software is still a commercial call under TRAI’s TCCCPR 2018. TRAI’s Third Amendment, notified on 18 September 2026 (PDF), opens in a new tab, gives such calls a name. A call started by an application without direct human dialling, including a call made with an artificial voice, is an application-to-person (A2P) call. Once the amendment’s declaration rule takes effect, 60 days after the amendment is published in the Gazette, the business must tell its operator in advance that it makes A2P calls and which caller ID ranges it uses. Registration on DLT, the number series and scrubbing against the NCPR stay with the business that is calling.

This section is a summary as of September 2026, not legal advice.

Common confusions

  • AI voice agent vs IVR. An IVR plays fixed messages and waits for a keypress or a word from a short list. An agent holds an open conversation and can answer questions nobody scripted, within the documents it is given.
  • AI voice agent vs robocall. A robocall plays the same recording to everyone. An agent listens and responds turn by turn.
  • AI voice agent vs chatbot. A chatbot works in text, at the reader’s pace. A voice agent works on a live call, where timing, interruptions and background noise all matter.
  • “The conversation decides everything.” It should not. Actions with legal weight, such as recording an opt-out, belong in fixed rules that apply on every turn, whatever is said.
